But if you’re connected to the municipal water system have you taken the time to understand how that system works and what strengths and vulnerabilities are inherent in it? Also what would the impact on fire protection services be if that system were to become compromised.

Below you will see two PDF documents created by the US Fire Administration, Water Supply Systems and Evaluation Methods Volume I: Water Supply System Concepts and Water Supply Systems and Evaluation Methods Volume II: Water Supply Evaluation Methods

Volume I Water Supply Systems Concepts discusses water system anatomy, water distribution system design concepts, water quality, consumer consumption and needed fire flow, alternative water supply systems, fire department water supply officer, water supply and effective fire protection, and emergency water supplies.

Volume 2 Water Supply System Evaluation Methods covers the evaluation of municipal water supply systems, water system hydraulics, storage capacity, water supply system computer modeling, and establishing a community program to document effective water supplies for fire protection.

We are developing a primer on water that will boils some of this information down, pun intended, but it is certainly worthwhile to take some time to look these documents over even though it is probably more than you ever wanted to know about water supply systems.

Couple these events with multiple versions internet “kill switch” legislation being proposed and I decided it might be a good idea to have a plan to try to keep the information flowing.

Of course one doesn’t have to dive into the pool of Government Conspiracy to realize there are a multitude of reasons you may loose connection to your “cloud”, natural disasters, man made catastrophy, or equipment failure.

So I started doing a bit of research and came up with a few How To articles that outline various ways to stay connected. These are just three links to set you on your journey down the rabbit hole, there is a ton of information out there.

Communicate if Your Government Shuts Off Your Internet

I know, I know, the response from many in the survival community will be you shouldn’t have to rely on technology etc. That isn’t really the point, it is more a problem solving exercise. Not to mention I’m a bit a of geek.

We’ve also gone ahead and started a Communications group in the Hive. Please feel free to join and share your knowledge on the subject.

Welcome to yet another relaunch of the Survival Hive. Unfortunately throughout the history of the site there have been a couple of evolutions, but this time we are confident we will stay with the current system and deal with and overcome it’s limitations.

To restate the objective of this website, the Survival Hive exists to build a network of those who are looking to share information on several topics within the self reliance community. Whether you are interested in Wilderness Survival, Disaster Preparedness, Off Grid living, or anything in between you should be able to find something useful here.

What makes the Survival Hive different from other websites, forums and blogs?

Well the Hive is a social networking site (think Facebook) that is controlled by the members. You create your own content within the site or bring it in from external sources.

Members can create groups on topics of their choosing. Within those groups the conversation and sharing of information is controlled by the group creator and anyone they choose to help them moderate. The site content is not controlled the traditional site administrator or moderator group like you see in forums or other types of websites.

There are many other features that allow you to integrate with outside resources and other social media. We will be documenting them over the comeing weeks in the way of easy to follow screen cast videos.

In the mean time jump in and explore, you won’t break anything and if you do we will fix it. If you do run into a jam please go to the Site Help and Announcements group and ask a question.
